Speck Dempsey is an internationally recognized city planning, urban design, and transportation policy firm serving municipalities, non-profits, and private developers. Our projects include downtown master plans, walkability studies, transit-oriented developments, urban and suburban infill plans, and designs for new towns, villages, streets, blocks, and buildings. We are a growing office of urbanists committed to creating walkable places.
Who Are We?

A talented urban designer who is passionate about making walkable places. You’ve read Jeff’s Walkable City and Walkable City Rules—and mostly agreed with them. You’ve attended the Congress for the New Urbanism, can already draw an NU-style site plan, and can tell us the proper width of a free, slow, and yield street travel lane. And you likely have met a member of the Speck Dempsey team before; maybe you’ve even collaborated with us on a past project.

What Positions Are We Recruiting For?
Director of Design
A senior role reporting directly to our Co-Founders. This person is an established colleague in the field of walkable urbanism, one who has a demonstrated record as a premier designer working on some of the world’s most exciting and well-executed plans and projects. The role includes not only leading the design of new neighborhoods and downtown plans, but also helping to share walkable planning practices nationally and globally.
Designer / Project Manager
This role is for a designer with a Master’s Degree in Urban Design (or similar), at least three years of professional experience, and the capacity to manage client relationships and produce all aspects of a plan and planning report, especially the creation of plans, codes, and other illustrative documents. Fluency in design software is essential.
Speck Dempsey offers competitive salaries and benefits commensurate with experience.
Compensation
Speck Dempsey is a dynamic firm that is growing quickly and offers unmatched opportunity for advancement. All team members work elbow-to-elbow with firm leadership on a daily basis and have the opportunity to grow into leadership roles more quickly than they might at larger firms.

When not at a project site, our team works in-person in a century-old building in walkable, transit-rich, mixed-use Coolidge Corner, in the heart of Brookline, Massachusetts. Our community was recently named by U.S. News and World Report as the Best Place to Live for Quality of Life in the entire United States.
